You may have seen people searching outside in random places for the ever elusive Pokemon, Pikachus, Mewtwo, etc...Crazy, right?!
Well, whether it’s crazy or not, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the importance of remembering how dangerous distractions on the road can be.
Americans are driving more and, according to the National Safety Council (NSC), there were more than 38,000 roadway fatalities in 2015, the highest number of deaths since 2008. The NSC also stated that about 26 percent of all car accidents are due to distracted driving.
Here are some helpful tips for "Pokemon Go" users and all drivers alike in order to avoid distractions while driving:
- Put it away. Switch it to silent mode before you start driving. Put it away so you aren’t tempted to pick it up and look at it while driving.
- Spread the word. Tell your friends and family that you do not answer phone calls or texts while driving and will get back to them when you're off the road.
- Pull over. Pull over if you need to make a call or send a text.
- Ask for help. Ask someone who is riding with you to make the call or respond to a text for you.
- NEVER text. Don't ever text and drive, surf the web or read your email while driving. It's dangerous and against the law in most states.
- Know the law. Gather information about state and local laws before you drive. Some states prohibit the use of hand-held cell phones in addition to texting.
- Prepare. If using a GPS device, enter your destination before you start to drive. If you need to review it or make a change, pull over to update your Maps feature in your phone.
- Keep Pets Secure. Allowing pets to roam free in the car is a big distraction.
- Mind the kids. Pull over to a safe place to address situations involving children in the car.
- Focus on driving. Multi-tasking behind the wheel can be dangerous. Refrain from eating, drinking, reading, grooming, smoking, and any other activity that takes your mind and eyes off the road.
Some of these tips may seem extreme, but are guaranteed to keep you, your passengers, and other drivers safe while on the road.
